Wellington schools benefit from laptop donation programme

Quadrent's partnership with Spark through the Green Lease programme is providing more laptops for students in need in Wellington.

A partnership between Quadrent and Spark is helping to bridge the digital divide in Wellington, with four local schools receiving donated laptops.

Through the arrangement with Quadrent’s Green Lease, Spark leases the laptops its employees use. Once the lease has ended, the laptops are then donated to schools without access to essential learning tools.

Schools that have benefited in the Wellington region include Mana College (50 laptops), Titahi Bay North School (25), Whare Kura Morehu ō Ratana (25), and Porirua College (25). With access to technology now in place, these schools can focus on how best to use the devices to improve student outcomes.

Immediate digital inclusion impact

To accelerate the impact of the programme, Quadrent has purchased more than 3,000 laptops from Spark. The proceeds from their resale in the secondary market will fund over 800 brand new laptops for donation in 2025. So far, more than 680 devices have been donated to 22 schools in Manawatu, Auckland, Northland, and now Wellington.

Long term, Spark is using Quadrent’s Green Lease initiative to fund the rollout of new laptops to its employees across New Zealand. By the end of March 2029, Spark will have donated 20% of these high-quality laptops to digital inclusion programmes through the Quadrent Green Lease.

Maximising educational impact

These donations remove the pressure on schools to figure out how to access devices, allowing them to focus on integrating technology in student-centred ways. Examples of how schools are using the devices include:

  • Shared classroom access through charging trolleys that rotate between classrooms
  • Library lending models that allow students to borrow laptops as needed
  • Dedicated computer labs, such as the one established in Mana College’s new Te Urukahika block

Jeff Chapman, Tumuaki/Principal of Mana College, added, “We opened up a new computer lab in our Te Urukahika block for several reasons; it’s our hub for technology, arts, and science, a space designed for digital learning. Teachers can now focus on the lesson and the learning itself. Part of being a teacher is having the right logistics and resources set up to make that easy, and this new space delivers exactly that”.

Helping all New Zealanders win big in a digital world

“Our tamariki will live in, create, and lead a world far more digital than it is today, yet for some students, attaining the technology they need for learning is a barrier. That’s why we are pleased to partner with Quadrent and participate in their Green Lease initiative, helping to close the digital divide,” says Leela Ashford, Corporate Relations and Sustainability Director at Spark.

Quadrent – a better tomorrow for all

Quadrent CEO Martyn Masterson welcomed the programme’s expansion and highlighted a growing focus on long-term impact.

“Our Green Lease initiative shows that donating laptops is just the first step. What truly matters is how schools can use them. By enabling flexible, innovative models of classroom technology, the schools are seeing meaningful improvements in engagement and achievement.”

Growing a sustainable impact

Quadrent and Spark are now encouraging other businesses to join the Green Lease programme.

Customers who lease laptops from Spark can sign up to the initiative as part of their contract.
